Avigdor Stematsky was born in 1908, Odessa, Russia. He immigrated to israel in 1921. Studies: 1925-26 Gymnasia Herzlia, Tel Aviv; with Orland; 1926-29 Bezalel, Jerusalem, with Aharon Avni, Arieh Aroch, Moshe Castel. In 1929 in the studio of Yitzhak Frankel, Tel Aviv; 1930-31 Grande Chaumiere, Paris. Teaching: Established studio with Streichman which was active until 1948; 1952-60 Avni Institute, Tel Aviv; 1962-77 Haifa University and Avni Institute. Prizes: 1941, 1956 Dizengoff Prize; 1958 Ramat Gan Prize; 1967 First Prize Tower of David Exhibition, Jerusalem; 1976 Sandberg Prize for Israeli Art, Israel Museum, Jerusalem. He was wounded in the War of Independence. Founded the “Massad” Group and was one of the founders of New Horizons Group. 1948 Represented at Venice Biennale; 1955 Sao Paulo Biennale. He died in 1989.
